Mysterious Cities of Gold
Children of the Sun,
See your time has just begun,
Searching for your way
Through adventures every day
Every day and night
With the condor in flight
With all your friends in tow
We search for the Cities of Gold...
Found it. Well, not the Mysterious city of gold. But Esteban and his mates did visit Machu Picchu in my favourite childhood cartoon, and 2 days ago, so did I.
Took a 2 day tour with Suzi, Nora, Joe, Ronan and Swissy. We visited the Sacred Valley which was a bit rubbish - I was so out of it from the pills the chemist had given me that I was unable to do anything. But drunk Ronan was great value. Got a late night train and got to the town at about 11pm to a grotty hostel. Damp bed. Freezing room. Grim. Grim. Grim.
Up at 5am for the bus ride up to Machu Picchu (the boys left at 4am and walked the couple of thousand Incan steps up the massive mountain - I mean, what? We´re not Incas...) Got to the site at sunrise. It was amazing. Amazing. This completely incredible hidden city on top of the highest mountain. Ran in to Duncan and his trekking buddies who had also just arrived after 4 days walking there. Had a 2 hour tour where we walked around the ruins (it was a broken ankle accident just waiting to happen) being shown all the symbolic stuff (I wasn´t really listening - Duncan knows more about it than the guides) and by 9am the sun was out and it was roasting. Got bitten to pieces (course I did) and then got the bus down. The boys walked the couple of thousand Incan steps down the massive mountain - I mean what? We´re not Incas...
Another grim night in the hostel of grot and then up at 5am - AGAIN - to get the train back to Cusco. Met up with Sonya (of Sonya and Marcin fame), had some lunch and then had a MASSIVE night out with the Point managers at Uptown. Free drinks all night. That´s a lot of free drinks. Danced, danced, Mama Africa´s, back to Uptown, danced, danced and then back to the hostel at about 5am (seeing a lot of that part of the day recently) where Arturdo and I watched some music channels... All good.
Ahhhh-ah-ah-ah
