Boredom in a boat

Dolphin watching

With Tom in tow we decided to head up to a town called Kratie where you can witness - first hand - an endangered species of dolphin that live in the Mekong. Gasp!

I wanted to go, mainly because in our heads we'd created the fact that you could actually swim with these dolphins (which, for the record, don't really look like dolphins - their faces are all round and they have massive smiles. I didn't really like them if I'm honest.) Of course, you can't swim with them. No one ever told us you could.

So we got a six or so hour bus to the town (where there was nothing but pyjama stools) and paid through the nose to go to some rapids to swim in the Mekong (it was a few pebbles and it was filthy - Eve and I didn't go in for fear of contracting Denghi Fever) then for the dolphin watching boat tour extravaganza. We went about two metres away from the shore and saw about three dolphins pop their heads out, miles away. They were blatantly animatronix.

Dolphin watching

It wasn't worth it. I've had a massive whale pop it's head up in front of me for a stroke for cheaper. This was rubbish. BUT the actual taxi journey to it was amazing, and for me worth every penny of the entire thing. Passing all the little huts on stilts and the unique Cambodian countryside was heart stopping. Karatie you're forgiven.
