Wired for (Milford) Sound?

Milford Sound

It’s meant to be one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand, if not on earth. It *is* beautiful. But it wasn’t all that. What I mean is - it was all that, it just wasn’t ALL that. You get me, right?

We arrived in Milford Sound at about 4pm after one of the most scenic drives we’ve had so far. Yeah, that was pretty spesh. Driving through beautiful mountains, snow, avalanche areas, streams and sun-streaked woods. Gorgeous. Checked in to the Milford Lodge which is like the only place to stay near the Sound and has nothing going on. Not even a television. No Neighbours. Once again. I have no idea what’s going on with Carl and Susan these days. Killer.

Anna and I got up pretty early the following morning as we’d booked ourselves on to one of the scenic cruises. Seeing as the drive to the Sound had promised us something pretty special we even splashed out on a more expensive cruise which gave us half an hour at the underwater observatory where you get to walk down under the sea and see stuff that only divers normally would. It was going to be stunning. It was going to be amazing. It was, infact, a heap of rubbish. The cruise lasted for about an hour and the best scenery was the stuff you get to see from the shore. The rest was Dulwich. Not even massive mountains. Just normal ones. With trees on. Plus the observatory was SUCH a let down. I was like, “erm, the stuff I can see is man made. I’m right, right?” Anna looked gutted. The guide looked totally miffed. But it was true. The fish and stuff were real, but there were window box type sea bed scenery which was meant to look all real, but it so wasn’t.

Top Milford Sound tip - save your money. Dodge the sand flies and go for a walk along the shore. It’s as good as it’s gonna get.
