Ankor What?

Siem Reap ruins - the gang

It's no surprise is it really? You know, that I'd never heard of Siem Reap or Ankor Watt - one of the ancient wonders of the world. But it's not in the top seven wonders, so I can't be *that* much to blame, right? Right.

Yeah, so, Siem Reap is in North Cambodia and is home to a whole load of ancient temple ruins. The main one is Ankor Watt. Basically, you buy a day ticket for $20 or a three day ticket for $40, hire a Tuk Tuk driver for the day (chips - $10) and then scoot about the different sites. And I have to say, it was pretty impressive.

All the sites are much of a muchness really. Really grand. All falling down. Lots of steep steps. Amazing carvings. That kind of thing.

We wandered about in the sweltering heat, stopping literally every 20 minutes for yet another bottle of water (it's hotter than the sun here) until we came to the penultimate site - Tomb Raider. It's where Angelina Jolie came to film one of the movies (it's all about her these days, isn't it?) and it's by far the most amazing. There's trees growing up through all the ruins and stuff. It was magical.

The final site is the biggy - Ankor Watt. Ta daaah! But to be honest, I'm with Angelina and prefer the other one (just one of the many similarities between herself and myself.) Yeah it was massive and grand and impressive - but it lacked character and charm and well, after a whole day in the baking sun we were all a bit tired, filthy and over it.

Cos' you're filthy

But it's another one to tick off on my 'Wonders of the World' list. Nearly done all of them now, haven't I?
